Sofia is the capital of and the largest city in Bulgaria. It is located in Western Bulgaria, at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain, and is the administrative, industrial, transport, and educational centre of the country. Sofia's name derives from the Greek word for “wisdom”. Sofia is located next to the northern slope of the Vitosha Mountain, in the surrounded by mountains Sofia field (Stara Planina, Sredna Gora, Lyulin, Lozen Mountain). Four mountain passes lead to the city: Vladaiski, Dragomanski, Petrohanski, and Botevgradski. Back in ancient times, important roads passed through them that connected the Adriatic and Central Europe with the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Middle East.
